Worship this Sunday at 9:30 AM: Luke’s version of Jesus’ most famous sermon takes place not on a mountain as it does in Matthew, but on a plain. Was this the same sermon preached in two different locations, or is it the same sermon with each gospel writer taking some creative (possibly symbolic) liberties in their storytelling? Either way, both the similarities and differences between the two versions are significant.

Matthew has Jesus preaching from “on high,” atop a mountain, delivering the Beatitudes like Moses delivered the Commandments. Luke, on the other hand, has Jesus preaching from a level playing field, coming face to face with those he’s preaching to. But in both versions, Jesus turns our idea of blessing on its head. Who’s blessed? Not the wealthy, popular, and successful, but those whose hands are empty enough to receive what God has to offer. How does Jesus seek to recalibrate our priorities now? That’s worth talking about.
